Story
Ta Moko artist, Te Rangitu Netana, has travelled widely throughout Europe teaching people about his culture and traditions. Ta Moko is an integral part of Maori and Pacific culture. Originally created using a fine chisel, this ancient art was passed down from generation to generation. Traditionally, Moko designs had elements that represented particular families and genealogies which were fundamental to individual identity in Maori society and expressed warrior power and pride. Te Rangitu is of Ngapuhi-Ngatiwai-Tearawa tribal descent and was brought up with strong Maori beliefs, learning elements of Maori art from his father and grandfather. He trained in Auckland through various apprenticeships and, at just 33 years old, he already has over 17 years' experience in traditional Ta Moko. In 1997, Te Rangitu created the famous Ta Moko tribal design on Robbie Williams' upper arm. Since then, many more people have contacted him from all over the world, wanting customised Ta Moko designs that reflect their own beliefs and spirituality.
